Souda

Souda is located 41 km south-west of Rethymnon, on the outskirts of the picturesque village of Sellia, just 3 km east of Plakias. Its name comes from the Latin word suda which means narrow passage and apparently refers to the valley of the Phoenix. The place is characterized by rich vegetation, in which the endemic Cretan palm (which thrives in very few parts of Crete) also thrives. The waters are crystal clear, the sand is coarse, gray and white and at the edge of the beach, there is a small river that flows into the sea.

Souda has deep crystal waters, and has thick sand, while it is often blown by “winds”, since there is often sandblasting. At the edge of the beach there are rocks and it is a place suitable for snorkelling. It is an organized beach, as there are restaurants, cafes, changing rooms and showers in the surrounding area.
